Part 4 of 5
In this five-part series, I'll share my perspective on what drives innovation in today's organizations. From asking better questions and embracing human-centered thinking to thoughtfully leveraging AI, we'll explore how leaders can unlock the creativity and ingenuity that already exists within their teams.
Continuing from:
- Blog 1: Discovering the Innovator in Us
- Blog 2: It Starts with a Simple Question – How might we?
- Blog 3: The Innovators are Already Here
No conversation about innovation is complete without talking about AI.
I am incredibly optimistic about the opportunities AI presents. It can uncover insights, accelerate learning, improve productivity, and help organizations solve problems of today and the future.
Let's be clear, though: the future isn't about AI. The future is about how we apply AI.
Many organizations are asking: "What can AI do?"
A better question may be:
How might we use AI to solve our most important business challenges?
The distinction matters. Whether you're leading in a startup building new capabilities or in an established organization modernizing decades of technology investments, implementing AI for AI's sake won't get you where you need to go. In fact, without an informed and thoughtful approach, AI can create distraction, duplication of effort, and unnecessary complexity that creates new tech debt and pulls attention away from what matters most.
The organizations seeing the greatest impact from AI tend to follow a different path: they apply AI with intention. They start by understanding the problem they're trying to solve. They focus on outcomes rather than technology. They engage the people closest to the work. They establish clear governance and responsible use practices. And they continuously learn, adapt, and refine as new opportunities emerge.
The organizations that will thrive won't necessarily be early industry adopters. They'll be the ones that thoughtfully combine AI with human creativity, judgment, empathy, and collaboration to solve meaningful problems.
Before launching your next AI initiative, consider asking:
- What problem are we trying to solve?
- How will this improve the experience of our customers, employees, or partners?
- How will we measure success?
- What risks or unintended consequences should we address?
- How will we learn and adapt as we go?
The answers to those questions often matter more than the technology itself.
Today’s Challenge: Consider the questions above for one of the initiatives you’re currently leading or contributing to. If you don’t know the answers, it’s never too late to develop them. In fact, even answering these questions late in an effort, can help you identify and Resolve, Own, Accept, or Mitigate (ROAM) risks you otherwise would not see coming.
